David Hyde Pierce won a Tony for playing Cioffi, but Robert Newman betters him… Cioffi is a character who must show star-struck giddiness. Newman — a tall, handsome daytime TV matinee idol from “The Guiding Light” – can nevertheless play against type and show how rabid a fan Cioffi is. Newman turns out to be an excellent song and dance man, too, especially in “A Tough Act to Follow,” which he fetchingly does with Amanda Rose.

Newman navigates Joann M. Hunter’s complicated choreography with ease, and his voice is easy on the ears, too. Very funny as a wannabe director, he aptly communicates the loneliness of a single guy in “Coffee Shop Nights.”
